Pauline Cockrill, Curator (National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame, at the time), in a letter dated 6 June 2002 responded to Des Hammond:

“… the Electoral Roll for 1931, which lists Sarah Bromley and Raymond Hammond.

The photos you mentioned I believe are from a book called Horrie Simpson’s Oodnadatta by Horrie Simpson (ed John Dallwitz, 1990)

There is also the school photo at Oodnadatta taken during the 1920s, which show Veronica Bromley and also another photo on p45 showing E Williams, F Wilkinson, H Gepp, J Wilkinson, Veronica and Mrs Bromley. It’s difficult to tell because of the hat but Mrs Bromley may have dark ie Aboriginal features.

The second photo with Veronica is also pictured in another book called Oodnadatta Walkabout: Reminiscences of Oodnadatta and beyond in the 1920s by Frank Shanahan (sp Melbourne, 1996) (Photo is opposite page 17).

Frank Shanahan was about 10 at the time and the doctor’s son at Oodnadatta. From this book we learn that Veronica was the daughter of Mr Bromley the mailman. Frank Shanahan says that Mr Bromley’s family lived at Oodnadatta but he never remembered seeing Mr Bromley.

I have since discovered that Charles (Hokey) Bromley delivered mail from Oodnadatta, SA to Horseshoe Bend NT with a team of 6 camels in the early 1900s. During the construction of the railway line to Alice Springs, opened in 1929, he carried supplies to the work sites with his team of 40 camels. Hokey died aged 96 in March 1969.

One can only suppose at this point that Sarah could possibly be a daughter of Charley Bromley (either Veronica or her sister or half-sister). Whether the Mrs Bromley in the photos is her mother is also not certain. The fact that your sister Isobel has the middle name Veronica certainly suggests a connection since it is not a common name.”
